«Blu is the title of a new piece for electric guitar and string trio, commissioned by Norio Sato and the Ensemble Nomad of Tokyo. Such a title can mean many things. It is actually an Italian word that indicates a color; in English (blue) it again indicates a color but also a state of mind: sadness and melancholy. At the same time it can mean, again in English, sudden (out of the blue). In this case all the meanings are valid: the melancholy in the observation of things, but also the aspect of suddenness. In this piece I explore the idea of adjacent objects that take on sense, in particular the idea of object, which is not only linked to sound, but is also open, assuming a color in relation to its relative position in time. This mechanism well represents the inner states of experience and at the same time it objectivates them in another temporal experience; it is, for me, a work dealing with constructive memory, which mainly characterizes the observer, psychologically. The memory, taken in this sense, is solicited by the act of listening and at the same time the music becomes a metaphor for a procedure of the memory: in other words the time that is, and that is built. For me, it is like representing time through music and obviously doing so in a completely subjective manner. It’s a question of determining a complex sound object in which music expresses time and simultaneously becomes a metaphor of it, as an object in itself and an object as it is perceived. The piece develops the idea of coherence of temporality and is an attempt to construct a link between the large and the small so that the different parts become a whole. In composing such a piece the sound is the central element: It serves to compose a plan of an invisible inner state, and in this dimension the sound, for me, assumes its most important value. The instrumentation of the piece also requires specific solutions. In effect, there would be much to say about this particular instrumental grouping, partly, of course, because the repertoire is very small, and partly because such a relationship is singular and difficult to put into practice. The electric guitar deserves, in fact, a treatment of its own: purely semantic problems immediately arise, deriving from the sound of such an instrument. However, I’ve tried to follow a possible path, that of writing a mixed piece, in which the loudspeaker is activated and controlled by the guitar; in effect, such an instrument makes it possible to create extremely rich sonorities that  in my scheme blend with the trio. The choice I made was not to amplify the strings and to think of a single sonority that unites the trio with the guitar. This objective is left in the hands of the performers. Only they will know how to dose the volumes and sound qualities to be able to give the piece the desired unity».

(Italian)

Contemporaneamente può significare, sempre in inglese, improvviso (out of the blue).
